About The Lake

Lake Almanor Almanor is located in Plumas County about 70 miles from Red Bluff and 120 miles from Reno, it's accessed by Hwy. 36 on the north side, and Hwy. 89 on the south.

Built in 1914, where the Cascades and the Sierra Nevadas come together, Almanor is one of the largest man-made lakes in California. In the shadow of Mt. Lassen, surrounded by mountains covered in pine and fir trees, Almanor is also a beautiful lake with an abundance of recreational oppurtunity.

The U.S. Forest Service, and the many resorts and commercial businesses at the lake, provide a great number of services for fishermen and other visitors as well.

There are two public, no fee, boat launches at the lake. Both maintained by the U.S. Forest Service, one located on the southeast shore, at the dam, and the other on the westshore, near the town of Prattville, in the Forest Service Campgrounds.

Trout fishing is very productive at Almanor. There are good numbers of rainbows and browns, with many, native of the Feather River. Also, King Salmon, introduced in 1982, have grown successfully, and add very much to the fishery.

In recent years, due to the popularity of bass fishing, Almanor has become known as a top notch smallmouth bass lake. Though the fishing pressure has grown, the bass seem to continue to do well at the lake.

Though the lake is usually ice free, it sits at an elevation of 4500ft., and occassionally skiffs of ice form on the lake. Some extreme winters have caused the lake to totally freeze up. If your planning on going up to the lake in the winter, its advised to contact the U.S. Forest Station (Almanor District) at (916) 258-2141, for conditions at the lake, and also ask for road conditions.
