Fishing The Lake

Regulations:

Fishing regulations change annually, check in the California Sport Fishing Regulations for current changes.

  • Trout & salmon: Open season all year. Limit: five
  • Bass: Open season all year. Limit: five bass. Minimum length: twelve inches.
  • Catfish: Open season all year. Limit: twenty (except Bullheads no limit.)
  • Crappie: Open season all year. Limit: twenty-five
  • Other species: Other species of fish may be taken in any number and at any time of the year by angling.
Trout: (rainbow & brown trout)
Trolling from the point just out of Flemming Meadows then over to the point of Jenkins Hill, across the narrows and then back to Flemming Meadows point, is a suggested trolling pattern. Berkley power baits, silver Wee Tads and shad colored Cripple Lures, are all productive.
Salmon: (King & Kokanee)
For King Salmon, try using Tomic Lure's Wee Tads, Speedy Shiners, Rapals and Rebels. One technique is to use large flashers on 15 ft. of cable and hook this to your downrigger ball. Put the release pin about 3 ft. above the ball, this will give you the benefit of the flasher without the weight of the flasher on your line. Places to try are, between the narrows and Jenkins Hill just before you enter Middle Bay, the power lines and between the two bridges and also the Woods Creek area cove.
The lake consistantly produces large numbers of salmon. Some lures to try for these fish are Apex lures and Tomic Lure's Wee Tads in silver, frog, flame and red sparkle patterns. Also, Humdingers and Cripple Lures in blue. Look for fish on your depth finder 30-60 ft. down and troll at 1 to 1 1/2 miles per hour.
Bass: (largemouth, smallmouth)
Look for largemouth in the coves. Top water and small crankbaits in shad colors often produce. You'll find smallmouth on the rocky points and islands throughout the lake. Split-shotting black or purple plastics can entice fish.
Crappie - Panfish:
The best time for Crappie is night and the preferred bait is minnows. The Flemming Marina area is one of the places to try.
Catfish:
Use chicken livers, anchovies, night crawlers, frozen mackerel or sardines on a slip sinker in warm coves such as Catfish Cove.
