Eagle Lake Trout
Eagle Lake Trout grow quickly to an average of 18 inches in length and three
pounds in weight. Their diet consists of insects, young Tui Chub and other
invertebrates. In the 1930's, trout populations declined due to a lowered lake
level and competition for available food sources. In the 1950's the Department
of Fish & Game initiated one of the most intensively managed hatchery
programs in California for the Eagle Lake Trout. Today, approximately 175,000
catchable trout are released each year for sport fishing.
Fall & Winter
Trolling in the upper 15ft. of the surface with Speedy Shiners or Needle
Fish will produce. For shore-fishermen try floating a nightcrawler a foot or two
off the bottom using a couple of small marshmellows or inflating the crawler
with air. The Circus Grounds, Boys Scout Camp, and lake side of jetty at marina
are all good places to try. Jigging maribou jigs on a bobber at the north end of
the lake also works.
Spring & Summer
Troll minnow imitating lures deep in the middle of the lake. Shore fishing
in the heat of summer can be tough. Look for deeper areas of the lake such as
the Boy Scout Camp.
