White Bass
Nacimiento is the only lake in California that is stocked with white bass. The fish may be caught any time during the year, but spring and fall tend to be the most productive times. Boaters find these fish by trolling around the lake with white/yellow Roostertails, Bayou Boogies or shad colored crankbaits until they see a boil in the surface of the water. They then start casting topwater plugs, crankbaits and other lures into the boils. When the white bass are actively chasing the shad, anglers can catch fish by tossing Zara Puppies, Pop-R's, Rico's and other topwater baits, along with Roostertails, Bayoue Boogies or Kastmasters into the boils made by the feeding fish. Drifting threadfin shad is another good technique for catching white bass. When the water warms up in the summer months, fishing topwater baits in the early morning and late evening hours will produce fish.
Areas to look for these fish are in the main channel of the lake between the Lake Nacimiento Marina and Bee Rock, Los Tablas (just south of the resort cabins), Oak Shores, and the narrows.
Bass: (largemouth, smallmouth)
Nacimiento has a good population of largemouth and smallmouth bass. The black bass are often found by anglers fishing for the white bass, but can also be found in their regular haunts. The primary food source in the lake is shad, so baits that imitate the shad naturally produce the best. Crankbaits, spinnerbaits, plastic worms and grubs, as well as topwater lures all work well here. In warmer months, look for bass in the top 10 feet of water late in the day and early mornings. During the day the fish will hold in 15 to 25 feet of water.
Crappie - Bluegill:
For crappie use minnows or try white/yellow mini jigs in 10 to 20 feet of water near trees and in coves over brush. There are good numbers of blugill for the kids and adults alike. Bluegill can be found in the backs of shallow coves all over the lake with meal worms or mini nightcrawlers 5 to 10 feet under a bobber.
Catfish:
Channel cats can be found in the backs of coves and along shallow banks. Los Tablas (south of the Lake Nacimiento Resort Cabins), is one of the more popular fishing spots. Anglers use chicken livers, anchovies, cut shad, night-crawlers, and minnows on a slip sinker to catch the cats.
