About The Lake

Lake Oroville was formed by the damming of the Feather River. Completed in 1967 it was built as part of the State Water Project by the State Department of Water Resources. Oroville being a canyon lake with steep rocky banks is a very deep lake at 695 ft.. The main body of the lake with its four major arms ( North, Middle, South, and West Forks of the Feather River ) has 167 miles of shoreline creating a wide variety of fishing opportunity. Lake Oroville is known for its excellent smallmouth and spotted bass fishing but the lake also has a good population of trout, salmon, catfish, crappie, and others.

There are three fully developed boat launches located at Lime Saddle on the north end of the lake, Bidwell Canyon and Loafer Creek at the south end. Each of the boat launching facilities require a small 'use fee'. There is also a boat ramp located on the north side of the dam, (Spillway Launch Area - no services provided). There are five undeveloped car top only boat ramps around the lake where you can launch free of charge.

Major camping facilities are limited to the south end of the lake, but there are a number of boat - in campsites located around the lake. Boat - In campgrounds are identified by signs posted on the beaches of these areas. Camping on shore is not permitted, however, boaters are welcome to go ashore for day-use enjoyment. There are two full service marinas on the lake. Bidwell Canyon at the south end of the lake, and Lime Saddle at the north end.
