Pine Flat Lake is located 35 miles east of Fresno in the oak-covered foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The lake provides recreational opportunities for hundreds and thousands of visitors annually.
Pine Flat Dam is an impressive concrete structure which impounds the waters of the Kings River. Construction of the 429 feet dam was completed in 1954. Today, Pine Flat continues to provide flood control protection and irrigation benefits to the San Joquin Valley, one of the country's most productive agricultural areas. A hydroelectric powerplant was completed in 1984.
Anglers can fish for trout on the upper or lower Kings River. The lake offers a variety of gamefish, including large and smallmouth bass, rainbow and brown trout, catfish, crappie, and bluegill. Fishing tackle, supplies, and information are available at the marinas and at numerous stores near the lake.
There are a total of six public campgrounds at Pine Flat. Camping is on a first-come, first-served basis. Organized groups may reserve a campsite at the Deer Creek Point Group Campground. All campgrounds are suitable for R.V. and tent camping. Picnic areas are also available.
The lake is available for camping, fishing, boating, sailing, and waterskiing. There are four boat launching ramps with courtesy docks. Six overnight mooring areas are located around the lake for the convenience of those who wish to spend the night aboard their vessel. Boaters are reminded that there is a counter-clockwise direction of travel on the lake and that water surface levels fluctuate daily and new hazards frequently appear.
The Kings River above Kirch Flat is an excellent whitewater rafting area in the spring and early summer. For further information, contact the Trimmer Ranger Station of the Sierra National Forest at (559) 855-8321.
